"It's the best season yet," said Virgin River star Martin Henderson of season 5 in an interview with Glamour.

Fans of the Netflix romantic drama have been waiting patiently for new episodes for well over a year and finally, the time has come to head back to northern California for another slice of small town drama.

Charmaine certainly made a splash in season 4, with Henderson confirming that we'll "find out" all of the key details relating to her babies in season 5.

And of course, there's the swoon-worthy relationship between Mel and Jack.

"What I'm hoping in season 5 is actually seeing them get closer together through adversity rather than being pushed apart, because I actually think the audiences love that," he said. "You've got to have some bumps, but seeing them mature and deepen their love is going to be nice."

You can watch season 5 from Thursday 7th September.

There will be 12 episodes in total, with the first 10 dropping that day. The final two will arrive on Monday 30th November as holiday episodes.

There's been some changes behind the scenes, with Supernatural writer/producer Patrick Sean Smith replacing Sue Tenney as showrunner.

“Sue had moved on to other projects, and I’d worked with Netflix on Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings so we had a pre-existing relationship," Smith told TVLine. "I was already a fan, and I was super excited when they came to me with the possibility.

"The cast cares so much about the show and the fans, and they want to put on the best show possible. I think they've done that for the past four seasons, so it just makes it easier for me to pick up the ball and keep running into season 5 and beyond."

Virgin River is also returning for season 6.

**Warning: Spoilers ahead for season 4**

As ever, there will be plenty of drama in the show's fifth outing, with "surprising new relationships, a shocking break-up, a difficult court trial, a heartbreaking goodbye, and a wildfire that threatens the town, bringing some people of Virgin River together while tearing others apart".

The official logline continues: "Issues of motherhood push Mel to make a big decision about her future at the clinic while her pregnancy unexpectedly sparks an emotional connection to her past. To further prove himself to Mel, Jack squares off with some long-overdue confrontations–with his own demons, and of course, Charmaine.

"And as Doc and Hope’s respective impairments throw their identities into question, the doctor and the mayor must find solace in their community, in their young new family, and in each other."

Smith previously told TVLine: "There's no time jump between four and five. There is a lot going on, and it took me a while to get my head around what [the characters have] all been through, where they're heading and where I'd like them to go. I wanted it to be as seamless as possible."

Throughout season 4, the main question looming over Mel and Jack was the paternity of her baby and in the final episode, we finally learned that Jack was the father.

But a shock reveal was just around the corner.

At the end of the episode, Jack rushed to see Charmaine, who he found lying on the floor while struggling to breathe. She said that what was happening to her was karma after she lied about Jack being the twins' father.

Elsewhere, Doc only just got to know his grandson Denny – however, in the season finale he revealed to Lizzie that he didn't want to get romantically involved with her because he "doesn't have a future" after being diagnosed with Huntington's Disease.

As for Hope, Annette O'Toole has said that things are looking positive for the Virgin River mayor, telling ScreenRant: "I know that Hope is on the road to recovery and she's going to get better, and I'm hoping that there's going to be more of her doing her mayoral duties than we've seen her do.

"Politics on a local level like that is really interesting, and we haven't really seen that side of her."
